I first
saw Punch at the JRTCA Nationals when she was just under a year old.
She was there with her owners and littermate, Brandywine Chagrin (aka
“Sally”). Punch was not the most striking of the two sisters, but was
described as the one who showed the most promise in the working
department. Nevertheless, I loved her, and inquired if she was
available. I asked again the following year and yet again. The third
time must be the charm, as finally a phone call came: Would I still be
interested? By then she had, indeed, fulfilled that working potential
by earning her Bronze Medallion for Special Merit in the Field, which
is the highest honor that the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America
bestows on working terriers. Incidentally, the “pretty sister”,
Chagrin, has also earned the Bronze). Beauty is more than skin deep.
I said
“Absolutely!” and Punch came to live at Prairie Creek.
Punch
is among the best working terriers I have had the pleasure to observe.
As a producer, she has, so far, out-produced herself. Her stand-out
son,
Prairie
Creek Recon (by Firestorm Blast) won his class at the 2009 JRTCA
Nationals, joined his sire in the Nationals Stud Dog and Get class and
earned the title of Reserve Dog Puppy. He was started in the field
late in his first summer and showed early promise by locating, working
and bolting a groundhog prior to his first birthday. He located,
worked and was dug to on an opossum, also prior to turning a year of
age. He earned his first NHC shortly thereafter.
At
home, Punch is easy to live with, a quality that we highly value and
strive to maintain, along with working ability and good genetic
health.
